Ruth 4 (vv. 3-6)

Before the elders, Boaz explains that Naomi is selling the land of Elimelek and offers the nearer redeemer the first right to buy it. The man initially agrees, but when Boaz reveals that redeeming the land also requires taking Ruth the Moabite as wife to preserve the dead man’s name, he withdraws. His refusal shifts the moment decisively toward Boaz’s faithful intervention.

장로들 앞에서 보아스는 나오미가 엘리멜렉의 땅을 팔고 있음을 알리며, 더 가까운 기업 무를 자에게 먼저 살 권리가 있음을 말한다. 그 사람은 처음에는 승낙하지만, 그 땅을 무르는 일에는 죽은 자의 이름을 잇기 위해 모압 여인 룻을 아내로 맞는 책임도 따른다는 보아스의 설명을 듣고 물러선다. 그의 거절로 인해 이 순간은 보아스의 신실한 개입으로 분명히 넘어가게 된다.
