Psalm 39 (vv. 4-6)

David asks the Lord to show him how brief life is. He sees human existence as a mere handbreadth, a breath, and a shadowy phantom: people hurry through the world, gathering wealth that will not remain theirs, while their lives fade almost as soon as they appear.

다윗은 주께 자신의 삶이 얼마나 짧은지 알게 해 달라고 간구한다. 그는 인간의 삶을 손너비만큼 짧고, 한낱 숨결이며, 그림자 같은 허상으로 본다. 사람들은 세상을 분주히 오가며 재물을 쌓지만, 그 재물은 결국 누구의 것이 될지 알지 못한 채 삶은 나타나자마자 사라져 간다.
