Proverbs 19 (vv. 1-3)

A poor but upright man walks steadily along a narrow path through a dusty hillside village, his clothing simple yet clean, his face calm and honest. Nearby, a reckless man rushes in haste down a crooked road, shouting with twisted speech, then stumbles among broken stones at the edge of a ravine. Even in his downfall, he lifts a clenched fist toward heaven in bitter resentment, revealing that his ruin has come from his own folly rather than from injustice.

가난하지만 정직한 한 사람이 먼지 날리는 언덕 마을의 좁은 길을 흔들림 없이 걸어간다. 그의 옷은 소박하지만 단정하고, 얼굴에는 평안함과 정직함이 드러난다. 가까운 곳에서는 경솔한 한 사람이 굽은 길을 급히 달려가며 비뚤어진 말을 쏟아내다가, 결국 골짜기 가장자리의 깨진 돌무더기 사이에서 넘어지고 만다. 그는 쓰러진 순간에도 하늘을 향해 주먹을 치켜들며 원망하는데, 그의 파멸이 부당함이 아니라 자신의 어리석음에서 비롯되었음을 보여 준다.
