Proverbs 13 (vv. 7-11)

In a busy town street, a richly dressed pretender passes by with outward splendor but hidden emptiness, while a plainly clothed person moves quietly with real abundance concealed in modesty. Nearby, a wealthy man weighs silver to ransom himself from danger, while a poor laborer stands exposed and unable to answer harsh threats. Above these tensions shines the brighter symbol of the passage: the light of the righteous burns steadily from a household lamp, while the lamp of the wicked sputters and goes dark. The scene gathers themes of deceptive appearances, fragile riches, and the enduring brightness of righteousness.

분주한 마을 거리에서 화려하게 차려입은 한 사람이 겉으로는 부유해 보이지만 실상은 텅 빈 모습으로 지나가고, 소박한 옷차림의 다른 사람은 겸손 속에 참된 풍요를 감춘 채 조용히 걸어간다. 가까운 곳에서는 한 부자가 위기에서 벗어나기 위해 은을 달아 보지만, 가난한 일꾼은 거친 위협 앞에 아무 대답도 하지 못한 채 서 있다. 이 긴장 위로 본문의 핵심 상징이 빛난다. 의인의 등불은 집 안에서 안정적으로 밝게 타오르지만, 악인의 등불은 깜빡이다가 꺼져 간다. 이 장면은 속이는 외양, 불안정한 재물, 그리고 오래 지속되는 의의 빛을 함께 보여 준다.
