Proverbs 11 (vv. 9-14)

An ancient city square becomes the stage for the power of speech. On one side, a godless slanderer spreads ruin with his mouth, whispering accusations and stirring unrest, while a gossip leaks a secret into eager ears. On the other side, a wise and trustworthy elder remains silent when needed, and a circle of advisers gathers around leaders at the city gate, bringing stability and victory through counsel. In the background, the city seems to brighten where the upright bless it, while darker shadows gather where wicked speech tears it down.

고대 성읍의 광장이 말의 힘을 보여 주는 무대가 된다. 한쪽에서는 경건하지 않은 비방자가 입으로 파괴를 퍼뜨리며 고발과 소문으로 혼란을 일으키고, 수군거리는 사람은 비밀을 다른 이들의 귀에 흘린다. 다른 쪽에서는 지혜롭고 신실한 장로가 필요한 때에 침묵을 지키고, 성문 곁에는 여러 조언자가 지도자들 주위에 모여 조언으로 안정과 승리를 가져온다. 배경에서는 정직한 자의 축복이 머무는 곳에 성읍이 밝아 보이고, 악한 말이 퍼지는 곳에는 더 짙은 그림자가 드리운다.
