One secretly uses dishonest scales, trying to cheat a customer, while another carefully measures goods with accurate weights before the watching crowd. Nearby, a humble and upright figure walks steadily with calm dignity, while a proud man, richly dressed, begins to draw looks of suspicion and shame. The scene captures the opening theme of the chapter: integrity and humility guide a person safely, but deception and pride lead toward disgrace.

분주한 고대 시장에서 두 상인이 뚜렷한 대조를 이룬다. 한 사람은 손님을 속이기 위해 몰래 속임수 저울을 사용하고, 다른 한 사람은 지켜보는 사람들 앞에서 정확한 추로 물건을 정직하게 단다. 가까이에는 겸손하고 정직한 인물이 차분한 품위를 지닌 채 곧게 걸어가고, 화려한 옷을 입은 교만한 사람은 의심과 수치를 담은 시선을 받기 시작한다. 이 장면은 이 장의 첫 주제를 보여 준다. 곧 정직과 겸손은 사람을 바른 길로 인도하지만, 속임수와 교만은 결국 수치로 이끈다는 것이다.
