The Gadites and Reubenites step forward again with a clarified promise. They pledge to build pens for their livestock and fortified cities for their families in Gilead, but every armed man will go ahead of Israel into battle and will not return home until all the tribes have received their inheritance. Moses accepts their vow and warns them that if they fail, their sin will surely find them out.
