Numbers 19 (vv. 17-22)

Ashes from the purification offering are mixed with fresh water in a jar, and a clean man uses hyssop to sprinkle the tent, its furnishings, and those made unclean by contact with death. The rite is performed on the third and seventh days, followed by washing and the hope of restoration by evening. This final scene brings the chapter’s central image into focus: holiness reaching into human impurity through a humble but divinely appointed act of cleansing.

정결 제물의 재가 항아리 속의 신선한 물과 섞이고, 한 정결한 사람이 우슬초를 사용해 장막과 그 기구들과 죽음과 접촉하여 부정해진 사람들에게 뿌린다. 이 의식은 셋째 날과 일곱째 날에 행해지며, 이어서 씻음이 있고 저녁이 되면 회복의 소망이 주어진다. 이 마지막 장면은 이 장의 중심 이미지를 분명히 보여 준다. 곧, 하나님이 정하신 겸손한 정결 행위를 통해 거룩이 인간의 부정 속으로 들어오는 것이다.
