Description
The long prayer moves from conquest and abundance to repeated rebellion, oppression, prophetic warning, and God's patient mercy. At last the people confess the tragedy of their present condition: though living in the fruitful land given to their ancestors, they are slaves under foreign kings because of their sins. In response, leaders, Levites, and priests commit themselves to a binding written agreement, sealing a renewed covenant in humility and resolve.
