Nehemiah 1 (vv. 1-3)

In the fortified citadel of Susa during the month of Kislev, Nehemiah receives Hanani and several men who have arrived from Judah. With concern and urgency, he asks about the surviving remnant and the condition of Jerusalem. Their answer is devastating: the returned exiles are in great trouble and disgrace, the city wall is broken down, and the gates have been burned.
