예수께서는 광야에서 사십 일 사십 야를 금식하신 뒤 극심한 허기 속에서 첫 번째 시험을 마주하신다. 메마른 돌들과 적막한 사막 한가운데서 그는 돌을 떡으로 만들라는 유혹을 거절하고, 하나님의 말씀으로 응답하심으로 육체적 배고픔보다 영적 순종을 택하신다.
