Matthew 3 (vv. 7-12)

When Pharisees and Sadducees come to the baptismal site, John confronts them with fierce prophetic authority. He warns that ancestry is not enough and calls for fruit worthy of repentance. Using vivid images of stones, an ax at the root of trees, and a winnowing fork separating wheat from chaff, he announces the coming One who is far greater, who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.
