Luke 15 (vv. 1-3)

Tax collectors and sinners press in around Jesus, listening intently to his words, while off to the side Pharisees and teachers of the law stand in guarded disapproval, whispering complaints that he welcomes such people and even eats with them. The scene establishes the tension that gives rise to the parables: mercy drawing the broken near, and religious pride resisting it.

세리들과 죄인들이 예수의 말씀을 열심히 들으려고 가까이 모여드는 한편, 한쪽에는 바리새인들과 율법교사들이 못마땅한 표정으로 서서 그가 이런 사람들을 받아들이고 함께 식사까지 한다고 수군거린다. 이 장면은 비유들이 시작되는 긴장을 보여 준다. 상처 입은 자들을 끌어당기는 자비와, 그것을 거부하는 종교적 교만이 대조된다.
