Luke 1 (vv. 57-79)

When Elizabeth’s son is born, neighbors gather for the circumcision and expect the child to be named after his father. Instead, Elizabeth insists on the name John, and the mute Zechariah confirms it by writing, 'His name is John.' Immediately his speech returns, and he bursts into praise and prophecy, declaring God’s redemption and the child’s future role in preparing the way of the Lord.

엘리사벳이 아들을 낳자 이웃들과 친족들이 할례를 위해 모이고, 아이의 이름을 아버지의 이름을 따라 지으려 한다. 그러나 엘리사벳은 그 이름이 요한이라고 말하고, 말 못하던 사가랴도 서판에 '그 이름은 요한'이라고 써서 이를 확인한다. 그 즉시 그의 말문이 열리고, 그는 하나님을 찬양하며 예언하여 하나님의 구속과 이 아이가 주의 길을 준비할 사명을 선포한다.
