Leviticus 11 (vv. 9-23)

This scene gathers the creatures of water, sky, and air into one grand tableau of discernment. Fish with fins and scales move through clear water as acceptable creatures, while other sea life is set apart as unclean; above them, birds such as eagles, vultures, ravens, owls, and storks circle or perch as forbidden food, while locusts and grasshoppers illustrate the limited exception among flying insects. The scene communicates the breadth of God’s order over creation and Israel’s responsibility to recognize that order.
