Description
Abimelek, the son of Jerub-Baal, goes to his mother’s relatives in Shechem and persuades them to rally the city behind him. He appeals to kinship and convinces the citizens that one ruler is better than seventy. The leaders of Shechem give him silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and with that money he gathers reckless followers, setting in motion a ruthless bid for power.
