Judges 3 (vv. 1-6)

The opening scene presents Israel living among the remaining peoples of Canaan as a test of covenant faithfulness. Instead of remaining distinct, the Israelites dwell side by side with Philistines, Canaanites, Sidonians, Hivites, and others, forming marriages and blending into the surrounding cultures. The image should capture both the beauty and danger of coexistence: fertile hills, village life, foreign shrines in the distance, and a subtle sense that spiritual compromise is taking root.
