John 5 (vv. 5-8)

Jesus focuses on one man who has been an invalid for thirty-eight years. Seeing him lying helpless on his mat, Jesus asks the piercing question, “Do you want to get well?” The man explains his isolation and disappointment, saying he has no one to help him into the pool before others go ahead. Then Jesus speaks with authority: “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”

예수께서는 그곳에 있던 서른여덟 해 된 병자 한 사람에게 시선을 두신다. 무력하게 자리에 누워 있는 그에게 예수께서는 “네가 낫고자 하느냐”라고 물으신다. 그 사람은 물이 움직일 때 자신을 연못에 넣어 줄 사람이 없어 늘 다른 이들이 먼저 내려간다고 자신의 외로움과 좌절을 털어놓는다. 그때 예수께서는 권위 있게 “일어나 네 자리를 들고 걸어가라”라고 말씀하신다.
