John 5 (vv. 1-3)

Jesus arrives in Jerusalem during a Jewish festival and approaches the pool called Bethesda near the Sheep Gate. The place is crowded with suffering humanity: blind, lame, and paralyzed people lying under five covered colonnades, waiting in hope. The setting establishes both the physical misery of the people and the atmosphere of expectation into which Jesus steps.

예수께서 유대인의 명절에 예루살렘에 올라오셔서 양문 곁에 있는 베데스다 연못으로 가신다. 그곳에는 다섯 개의 행각 아래 눈먼 사람들, 다리 저는 사람들, 중풍병자들이 누워 있으며, 모두 희망을 품고 기다리고 있다. 이 장면은 사람들의 육체적 고통과 더불어 예수께서 들어오시는 기대의 분위기를 함께 보여 준다.
