John 2 (vv. 13-17)

At Passover in Jerusalem, Jesus enters the temple courts and finds commerce overtaking sacred space: cattle, sheep, doves, and money changers filling the area with noise and transaction. In fierce holy zeal, he drives out the animals, overturns the tables, and commands the sellers to remove their goods, declaring that his Father’s house must not become a market. The scene is charged with righteous authority rather than uncontrolled violence.

유월절을 맞아 예루살렘에 올라오신 예수는 성전 뜰에서 소와 양과 비둘기, 그리고 환전상들이 가득한 모습을 보신다. 거룩한 공간이 장사와 소음으로 가득 찬 것을 보시고, 예수는 거룩한 열심으로 짐승들을 내쫓고 상을 뒤엎으며, 자기 아버지의 집을 장사하는 집으로 만들지 말라고 외치신다. 이 장면은 무질서한 폭력이 아니라 의로운 권위로 가득 차 있다.
