John 19 (vv. 25-30)

Near the cross stand Jesus’ mother, other faithful women, and the beloved disciple. In compassion, Jesus entrusts his mother to the disciple. Later he says, “I am thirsty,” receives sour wine on a hyssop stalk, and finally declares, “It is finished,” bowing his head and giving up his spirit. The scene is intimate, sorrowful, and filled with completion rather than defeat.

십자가 곁에는 예수의 어머니와 몇몇 여인들, 그리고 사랑하시는 제자가 서 있다. 예수께서는 마지막 순간에도 어머니를 제자에게 맡기시는 자비를 보이신다. 이어 “내가 목마르다” 말씀하시고 우슬초 줄기에 달린 신 포도주를 받으신 뒤, “다 이루었다”라고 선언하시며 머리를 숙여 영혼이 떠나신다. 이 장면은 깊은 슬픔 속에서도 패배가 아닌 완성을 담고 있다.
