John 13 (vv. 1-5)

During the evening meal before Passover, Jesus, fully aware that his hour has come and that he has come from God and is returning to God, rises from the table in an act of deliberate humility. He removes his outer garment, wraps a towel around his waist, pours water into a basin, and begins to wash the feet of his disciples. The scene joins majesty and servanthood: the one who knows all authority has been given to him stoops to perform the work of a servant.
