Job 28 (vv. 12-19)

After humanity uncovers the earth’s hidden riches, the poem turns and asks where wisdom can be found. A symbolic display of gold, silver, onyx, crystal, coral, jasper, rubies, topaz, and lapis lazuli surrounds an empty center, showing that no treasure can purchase understanding. The deep and the sea themselves testify that wisdom is not contained in their realms. The scene conveys the futility of trying to obtain wisdom through wealth or human possession.

사람이 땅속의 감추어진 보물을 찾아낸 뒤, 시는 돌연 지혜가 어디에 있는지 묻는다. 금과 은, 호마노, 수정, 산호, 벽옥, 루비, 황옥, 청금석 같은 귀한 보석들이 상징적으로 놓여 있지만 중심은 비어 있어 어떤 보화로도 명철을 살 수 없음을 드러낸다. 깊음과 바다조차도 지혜가 자기 안에 없다고 증언한다. 이 장면은 재물이나 소유로는 지혜를 얻을 수 없다는 허무와 한계를 보여 준다.
