Job 17 (vv. 1-3)

Job sits in physical and emotional ruin, overwhelmed by the sense that his days are ending and the grave is near. Around him are hostile companions whose presence feels like mockery rather than comfort. In his anguish he lifts his appeal toward heaven, asking God alone to provide the pledge or guarantee no human being will offer him.
