Job 16 (vv. 1-5)

Job answers his friends with bitter honesty. Seated in misery, he rebukes them for their endless speeches and calls them miserable comforters. He contrasts their cold words with the compassion he says he would have shown if their roles were reversed, imagining that true comfort should strengthen the suffering rather than shame them.

욥은 친구들에게 쓰라린 정직함으로 대답한다. 비참한 상태로 앉아 있는 그는 그들의 끝없는 말을 꾸짖으며 그들을 비참한 위로자들이라고 부른다. 그는 입장이 바뀌었다면 자신은 그들처럼 차갑게 말하지 않고, 고난받는 자를 부끄럽게 하기보다 붙들어 주는 진정한 위로를 베풀었을 것이라고 대비한다.
