Job 14 (vv. 7-9)

In one of the chapter’s most hopeful images, a seemingly dead tree stump rests in dry ground, its old roots buried deep in exhausted soil. Nearby, a faint trickle or moist breeze hints at water, and from the stump fresh green shoots begin to emerge. The scene embodies Job’s observation that even a cut-down tree has hope: at the scent of water it buds again and sends out new growth, a striking contrast to human frailty.
