Because the people dismiss the LORD's word and mock the prophets, the divine response comes through Jeremiah's mouth like fire. In vision-like form, a distant foreign army advances toward Judah, its warriors disciplined and formidable, their quivers like an open grave and their coming threatening harvests, children, flocks, and fortified cities. Yet even amid this grim announcement, the message includes restraint: the nation will be devastated, but not completely destroyed.
