Jeremiah 40 (vv. 13-16)

Johanan and the remaining officers come to Gedaliah with a grave warning: Ishmael has been sent by Baalis king of the Ammonites to assassinate him. In private, Johanan even offers to kill Ishmael first to save Gedaliah and protect the remnant from being scattered again. Gedaliah refuses to believe the report and forbids such an act. The scene is charged with tension, hidden danger, and tragic irony, as a hopeful beginning stands on the edge of collapse.
