Jeremiah stands among exhausted captives at Ramah, still marked by the chains that had bound him, when Nebuzaradan, commander of the Babylonian guard, singles him out and orders his release. The Babylonian officer acknowledges that the disaster that fell on Jerusalem came as judgment from the LORD, and he offers Jeremiah freedom to go wherever he chooses. The scene captures the contrast between exile and release, ruin and mercy, with Jeremiah suddenly separated from the line of prisoners being led away to Babylon.
