As Babylon’s armies surround Jerusalem and the last fortified cities of Judah struggle to hold out, Jeremiah stands before King Zedekiah with a grave message from the LORD. He announces that Jerusalem will be handed over to Nebuchadnezzar, the city will be burned, and Zedekiah will be captured and taken to Babylon. Yet the prophecy also contains a strange mercy: the king will not die by the sword, but will die in peace and receive royal lamentation.
