Description
Bel and Nebo, the great gods of Babylon, are shown as powerless burdens rather than saviors. Their heavy idol-images are strapped onto exhausted oxen and donkeys as a defeated people are led away into captivity. The scene exposes the humiliation of false gods: they stoop, they bow, and they cannot rescue even themselves, much less those who trusted in them.
