Isaiah 44 (vv. 9-20)

Isaiah exposes the absurdity of idolatry through the labor of craftsmen. A blacksmith strains over glowing coals, growing weak and thirsty, while a carpenter carefully measures and carves wood into human form. In bitter irony, the same tree that warms a man, bakes his bread, and cooks his meal is also turned into an idol before which he kneels and prays for salvation.

이사야는 장인들의 수고를 통해 우상숭배의 어리석음을 드러낸다. 대장장이는 뜨거운 숯불 앞에서 힘겹게 일하다가 지치고 목말라하며, 목수는 나무를 정밀하게 재고 깎아 사람의 형상으로 만든다. 날카로운 풍자 속에서, 사람을 따뜻하게 하고 빵을 굽고 음식을 익히는 바로 그 나무가 우상으로 만들어져, 그 앞에 무릎 꿇고 구원을 구하는 대상이 된다.
