Isaiah 29 (vv. 1-4)

Jerusalem, called Ariel, is shown at the height of its religious calendar, yet a shadow of judgment falls over it. The city where David once dwelt is suddenly surrounded on every side by enemy camps, towers, and siege ramps. The people are brought low, and the once-proud city seems pressed down into the earth itself, as if its voice can only rise as a weak whisper from the dust.

아리엘이라 불리는 예루살렘은 종교 절기가 한창인 모습으로 보이지만, 그 위에 심판의 그림자가 드리운다. 다윗이 거하던 그 도성은 갑자기 사방에서 적의 진영과 망대와 토성에 둘러싸인다. 백성은 낮아지고, 한때 자랑하던 성읍은 마치 땅속으로 짓눌린 듯하여 그 목소리조차 흙먼지 속에서 희미하게 속삭이는 것처럼 보인다.
