Hosea 5 (vv. 11-13)

Ephraim is shown as crushed under judgment because of its pursuit of idols, while Judah quietly decays. The LORD’s discipline is compared not first to sudden destruction but to a moth and to rot, slow forces that consume from within. When the nations finally recognize their sickness and wounds, they turn not to repentance but to Assyria, sending for a great king to heal them. Yet the foreign power they trust cannot cure their spiritual disease or mend what divine judgment has exposed.

에브라임은 우상을 좇은 결과 심판 아래 짓눌린 모습으로 나타나고, 유다는 조용히 안에서부터 썩어 간다. 여호와의 징계는 먼저 갑작스러운 파멸이 아니라 옷감을 갉아먹는 좀과 내부를 무너뜨리는 썩음에 비유된다. 두 나라가 마침내 자신의 병과 상처를 알아차리게 되자, 그들은 회개로 돌아가지 않고 앗수르를 향해 도움을 구하며 큰 왕에게 사신을 보낸다. 그러나 그들이 의지하는 외세는 영적 질병을 고칠 수도, 하나님의 심판이 드러낸 상처를 치유할 수도 없다.
