Description

The final scene traces Israel’s history in layered form. Jacob is seen in Aram as a humble shepherd laboring to gain a wife, while another part of the composition recalls Israel’s deliverance from Egypt under the care of a prophet. Yet the tone darkens as Ephraim’s later contempt and bloodguilt rise before the viewer, bringing the certainty of divine repayment. The scene shows the contrast between humble beginnings under God’s care and the bitter end brought by rebellion.
