Hebrews 12 (vv. 12-17)

Those once weak are being restored: feeble arms are lifted, weak knees steadied, and a rough path is made level so the lame may be healed rather than harmed. Along the path, a bitter root threatens to spread, while in another symbolic detail Esau exchanges his inheritance for a simple meal, warning against godlessness and short-sighted desire.

한때 약해졌던 이들이 다시 세워진다. 축 처진 팔이 들어 올려지고, 약한 무릎이 굳게 서며, 저는 이가 상하지 않고 도리어 고침받도록 험한 길이 평탄하게 다듬어진다. 길가에는 많은 사람을 더럽힐 수 있는 쓴 뿌리가 퍼지려 하고, 또 다른 상징적 장면에서는 에서가 한 그릇 음식과 장자의 권리를 바꾸며 경건 없고 근시안적인 욕망의 위험을 경고한다.
