Genesis 48 (vv. 17-22)

Joseph, troubled that Jacob’s right hand rests on Ephraim instead of the firstborn Manasseh, tries to correct his father’s hands. But Jacob refuses, calmly insisting that he knows what he is doing: Manasseh will become great, yet Ephraim will surpass him. He blesses the boys so that future generations in Israel will invoke their names, then turns to Joseph with final words of death, divine presence, and inheritance in the land promised to their fathers.

요셉은 야곱의 오른손이 장자 므낫세가 아니라 에브라임 위에 놓인 것을 보고 마음이 불편해져 아버지의 손을 바로잡으려 한다. 그러나 야곱은 자신이 무엇을 하는지 안다며 조용히 거절하고, 므낫세도 큰 민족이 되겠지만 에브라임이 그보다 더 클 것이라고 선언한다. 그는 두 아이를 축복하여 훗날 이스라엘이 그들의 이름으로 축복을 빌게 하며, 이어서 요셉에게 자신의 죽음이 가까움을 말하면서도 하나님이 함께하시고 조상들의 땅으로 돌아가게 하실 것과 상속의 약속을 전한다.
