Genesis 38 (vv. 15-19)

Judah mistakes the veiled Tamar for a prostitute and approaches her by the roadside. She asks for a pledge before he sends payment, and he gives her his seal, its cord, and his staff—personal items that will later expose the truth. Afterward Tamar leaves, removes her veil, and returns to her widow’s garments, now carrying the evidence and the future within her.

유다는 얼굴을 가린 다말을 보고 그녀를 창녀로 오해하여 길가로 다가간다. 다말은 대가를 보내기 전 담보를 요구하고, 유다는 자신의 인장과 그 끈과 지팡이를 내어준다. 이 개인적인 물건들은 훗날 진실을 드러내는 증거가 된다. 이후 다말은 떠나서 베일을 벗고 다시 과부의 옷을 입는데, 이제 그녀는 증거와 함께 미래를 품고 있다.
