Description
Jacob arrives at Luz, that is Bethel, with all the people who are with him, and there he builds an altar to the God who had revealed himself when Jacob fled from Esau. The sacred site becomes a place of remembrance and worship, but it is also marked by sorrow as Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, dies and is buried beneath an oak nearby. The scene holds worship and mourning together in the same holy landscape.
