Genesis 32 (vv. 22-30)

After sending his wives, children, and possessions across the ford of the Jabbok, Jacob is left alone in the darkness. There he wrestles until daybreak with a mysterious man whose identity carries divine weight. The struggle is physical and spiritual: Jacob refuses to let go without a blessing, and in that encounter he receives a new name, Israel, because he has struggled with God and with men and prevailed.

야곱은 두 아내와 자녀들, 모든 소유를 얍복 나루를 건너보낸 뒤 어둠 속에 홀로 남는다. 그곳에서 그는 신비로운 한 사람과 날이 새도록 씨름하는데, 그 존재는 하나님의 무게를 지닌다. 이 싸움은 육체적이면서도 영적인 싸움이며, 야곱은 축복하지 않으면 놓지 않겠다고 매달린다. 그 만남 속에서 그는 하나님과 사람과 겨루어 이겼다는 뜻의 새 이름, 이스라엘을 받는다.
