Genesis 29 (vv. 1-8)

Jacob reaches the land of the eastern peoples and finds a well in the open country. Three flocks of sheep lie nearby, waiting because a massive stone covers the mouth of the well. Jacob speaks with the shepherds, learns they are from Harran, and asks about Laban. They tell him Laban is well and explain that the sheep cannot be watered until all the flocks gather and the heavy stone is rolled away.

야곱은 동방 사람들의 땅에 이르러 들판 한가운데 있는 우물을 발견한다. 그 곁에는 세 떼의 양이 누워 기다리고 있는데, 우물 입구를 큰 돌이 덮고 있기 때문이다. 야곱은 목자들과 대화하며 그들이 하란 출신임을 알고 라반에 대해 묻는다. 목자들은 라반이 잘 지내고 있다고 말하며, 모든 양 떼가 모여야만 무거운 돌을 옮기고 양들에게 물을 먹일 수 있다고 설명한다.
