Genesis 22 (vv. 9-10)

At the appointed place, Abraham builds an altar of stones, arranges the wood, binds Isaac, and lays him upon it. Then he stretches out his hand and takes the knife. The scene should not focus on graphic violence, but on unbearable stillness: the father’s obedience, the son’s vulnerability, and the suspended instant before the act, when heaven and earth seem to hold their breath.

정해진 곳에 이르러 아브라함은 돌로 제단을 쌓고 나무를 가지런히 놓은 뒤, 이삭을 묶어 그 위에 눕힌다. 그리고 손을 뻗어 칼을 든다. 이 장면은 폭력의 묘사보다 견딜 수 없는 정적에 초점을 두어야 한다. 아버지의 순종, 아들의 연약함, 그리고 행동 직전의 멈춰 선 순간 속에서 하늘과 땅이 숨을 죽인 듯한 긴장을 담아낸다.
