Genesis 13 (vv. 10-13)

Lot lifts his eyes and sees the Jordan plain, lush and well watered, like a garden in contrast to the harsher hill country. Drawn by its visible richness, he chooses the fertile region and moves eastward, pitching his tents near Sodom. The beauty of the land is shadowed by moral danger, for the cities of the plain are prosperous yet marked by great wickedness.

롯은 눈을 들어 요단 온 들을 바라보며, 거친 산지와 대조되는 물이 넉넉하고 동산 같은 비옥함을 본다. 그는 눈에 보이는 풍요에 이끌려 그 기름진 지역을 선택하고 동쪽으로 옮겨 가며, 소돔 가까이에 장막을 친다. 그러나 그 아름다운 땅에는 도덕적 위험의 그림자가 드리워져 있는데, 평야의 도시들은 번성하지만 큰 악으로 가득 차 있다.
