Description
Abram arrives at Shechem, at the site of the great tree of Moreh, in a land already inhabited by Canaanites. There the LORD appears to him and promises, 'To your offspring I will give this land.' The altar becomes a visual testimony that the land belongs not ultimately to present powers but to the future promise of God.
