Esther 2 (vv. 1-4)

After King Xerxes' anger toward Vashti has cooled, he remembers what happened and what was decreed. His attendants propose a vast empire-wide search for beautiful young women to be brought to the citadel of Susa, placed under the care of Hegai, and prepared with beauty treatments so that one may be chosen as queen. The king accepts the plan, setting the events of Esther's rise in motion.

왕비 와스디를 향한 크세르크세스 왕의 분노가 가라앉은 뒤, 왕은 이전에 일어난 일과 자신이 내린 조서를 떠올린다. 그러자 신하들은 제국 전역에서 아름다운 젊은 여인들을 찾아 수산 궁성으로 데려오고, 헤개가 돌보며 미용 절차를 거치게 한 뒤 그중 한 사람을 새 왕비로 세우자고 제안한다. 왕은 이 계획을 받아들이고, 이로써 에스더의 등장이 시작된다.
