Ecclesiastes 4 (vv. 4-6)

The passage turns from oppression to the inner engine of much human effort: envy. One figure strains to gather more and more, driven by comparison and restless ambition, while another sits idle with folded hands, wasting away in foolish passivity. Between these extremes stands the wisdom of contentment: one quiet handful is better than two hands full gained through exhausting toil and endless striving.
