Deuteronomy 8 (vv. 15-16, 19-20)

The people are reminded of the dreadful wilderness with its thirst, serpents, and scorpions, where God brought water from hard rock and fed them with manna. Yet the memory of mercy is joined to a severe warning: if they forget the LORD and turn to other gods, they will perish like the nations before them. The scene holds both rescue and judgment in tense balance.

백성은 갈증과 뱀과 전갈이 있던 두렵고 메마른 광야를 다시 떠올리게 되며, 그곳에서 하나님은 단단한 반석에서 물을 내시고 만나로 그들을 먹이셨다. 그러나 자비의 기억은 엄중한 경고와 함께 주어진다. 만일 그들이 여호와를 잊고 다른 신들을 따르면, 그들보다 먼저 있던 민족들처럼 멸망하게 될 것이다. 이 장면은 구원과 심판의 긴장감을 함께 담고 있다.
