Deuteronomy 13 (vv. 15-18)

After the charge is proven true, the idolatrous town is placed under total destruction. Its plunder is gathered into the center of the public square, and the town is burned as a whole offering to the LORD, left as a permanent ruin. Rather than focusing on graphic violence, the scene emphasizes the aftermath: smoke rising over collapsed walls, abandoned possessions consumed by fire, and the fearful holiness of a community purged so that mercy and compassion may return.

혐의가 사실로 드러난 뒤, 우상숭배한 성읍은 온전히 진멸에 넘겨진다. 그 약탈물은 광장 한가운데 모아지고, 성읍 전체는 여호와께 드리는 번제처럼 불태워져 영원한 폐허로 남는다. 이 장면은 잔혹한 폭력 자체보다 그 여파를 강조한다. 무너진 성벽 위로 연기가 치솟고, 버려진 재물들이 불에 삼켜지며, 공동체가 악에서 정결하게 되어 다시 긍휼과 자비를 얻고자 하는 두렵고도 거룩한 분위기가 드러난다.
