Amos 4 (vv. 9-11)

The warnings intensify: gardens and vineyards are struck, fig and olive trees are devoured, plague and war sweep through the land, and some are overthrown like Sodom and Gomorrah. Yet even after such devastation, the people do not return. The scene gathers these judgments into one haunting tableau—blighted vines, stripped trees, abandoned campfires, smoke rising from ruined places, and a single half-burned piece of wood rescued from flames, symbolizing a people barely spared but still unchanged.

경고는 더욱 강해진다. 동산과 포도원은 재앙을 맞고, 무화과나무와 감람나무는 메뚜기에게 먹히며, 전염병과 전쟁이 땅을 휩쓴다. 어떤 이들은 소돔과 고모라처럼 무너졌지만, 그럼에도 백성은 돌아오지 않는다. 이 장면은 이 모든 심판을 하나의 음산한 그림으로 모은다. 병든 포도나무, 잎이 벗겨진 나무들, 버려진 진영의 흔적, 무너진 곳에서 피어오르는 연기, 그리고 불에서 겨우 건져 낸 반쯤 탄 나뭇조각이 등장하여, 간신히 보존되었으나 여전히 변하지 않은 백성을 상징한다.
