2 Samuel 2 (vv. 12-17)

Joab and David’s men meet Abner and the servants of Ish-Bosheth at the pool of Gibeon, each side seated opposite the other. What begins as a controlled contest between twelve young men from each side turns into a tragic and fierce battle. The image should capture the eerie symmetry of the two camps, the still water between them, and the sudden collapse of order into deadly conflict without dwelling on graphic violence.
